ladymirthPlease don't take this seriously. I'm just blowing off steam and raging incoherenly. People in the HP fandom may be offended by this rant, so they should re-consider before clicking. It is aimed at nobody on my flist.
I'm too angry to flock this post. I WANT those idiots to read it if they happen to stumble on this.
I loathe all WOWSERS. Fandom Wowsers are the worst of all. These are generally newbies who've come along since HBP or just before OoTP and don't have a shitting clue what fandom was like in the Dark Ages, nor how much our BNFs have contributed toward making this fandom a haven for artists of all genres and one of the most tolerant and richly diverse in the world of fen. They don't know that, initially, fanfic was just a plaything for us, and a chance to excorcise our Mary-Sues and cheesiness out of our systems. They don't know that we had little to no good writing in the fandom and that the fanon myths and culture evolved through the first BNFs' stories. They don't even care, I bet. And they sure as hell have no idea about fanon culture and how far fanfic had to evolve to take its place among accepted art.
I don't know why it is, but every time I go surfing, I keep having this Cassandra Clair plagiarism debacle sicced in my face. This would be annoying even if I didn't like Cassie, which I do. SHE MADE A MISTAKE people. She apologised, accepted that she deserved to be booted off FF.net and finally even yanked her fics from the internet. Now these self-righteous SOBs are attacking people who support her and her fellow BNF friends who have worked with her in fandom for years. They're yanking their fics off Fictionalley. Worse, they're flaming people who choose not to follow suit.
Now, I only realized recently that Heidi, Cassie and Co used to be the senior mods at Fictionalley, but Fictionalley (in my experience) has always been the best and most tolerant HP fic archive on the net. It's the one fansite that accepts all ships impartially and not curtail writers and readers by being an exclusive shipping archive with strict ratings requirements. This site has been developed by a dedicated and large group of people over the years, and now the writers are sniffing at them and saying, "I'm sorry, I refuse to be associated with people who are known to host plagiarists."
Dear, motherfuckers. Take your self-righteous tripe and sanctimonious lectures and get the hell out of this fandom. Plagiarists can be penalised and later given a second chance. That's what we do with ex-convicts even. But ignorant, pompous, self-righteous scum like you should be packed off staright to hell where you can't hurt hard-working people who have helped thousands of artists like you to archive ther work in a tolerant, abuse-free environment. Cassie Clair made an idiotic gaff (one which was shared by many other writers of that time) and paid for it, and paid for it and paid for it. This fandom will now hear her name and immediately think "PLAGIARIST!" instead of remembering a woman who supported the early deviant smut-writers and slashers and founded a fan community that was a neutral ground for all fan artists. Oh, she, Heidi and the rest of the BNFs have done some screamingly stupid and hot-headed things over the years. However, we do not hold this against them because they, unlike you, are able TO GROW UP, and get off their high horses.
I've loved Lori, Cassie, Hiedi, Anjie and the rest of them not because I thought their fic writing was genius but because they created universes wherein they fully concious of their own cheesiness and laughed at them. The made cheesy a fun concept, and they made fanfic fun and engaging, regardless of shipping. In addition, they are a loyal, fun, down-to-earth set who enjoyed their fame (and sometimes got carried away with it, yes) but remained liberal-minded, sensible and intelligent thinkers who were willing to be movers and shakers for something that was entirely non-profit. They are the exact anti-thesis of you people in that they don't take themselves so seriously.
You don't know the people. You don't know the fandom. You only see a handful of grudge-holders and ignorant WOWSERs and band-wagon jumpers trampling on them when they're down.
Btw. Michela Ecks is a very sad, bitter woman. I should've guessed she owns Fanhistory.net when I saw the entire entry on Cassandra Claire prattling on plagiarism.
