Yes, Another One. Don't Groan!
Oct. 4th, 2005 09:39 pmWe had the Annual English Day Writing Competitions at school today. I thought I wouldn’t be allowed to participate, seeing as I was in the Literary, Music and Drama committee, which was organizing it, but there was apparently no such rule. Is that ethical? I’m not complaining, but I have my doubts.
Anywho (to borrow one of
entirelytoo ’s facourite words ), we were given half a hematological hour to compose a four-stanza poem about “Words”. Here’s what I came up with. Please forgive the mediocrity, but that’s the best I can manage in 30 effing minutes. Honestly, I wonder what the teachers in charge have been smoking.
WORDS
What wonder lies in human Word,
In their many hues and varying weights,
For what Word could be, if not seen nor heard?
What counts the silent loves and aches?
That human currency of truth and lies,
Revalued, devalued, over-sold, under-rated
Gilded and bold in men’s crafty wiles,
Bartered over ones unadulterated
Action be merely the dumb beast of burden,
Toiling overshadowed on the world’s wayside
Be ever to the capricious Word beholden,
To be granted its dues and justified
Unleashed by tongue, pinned down by pen
Words fly thick and fast through the air,
A fatal poison or healing balm,
Empowered within the mind’s deep lair
May come a day when the world be at rest
In Wisdom, Justice and Prosperity
When Words be uncolored and weighted true,
And Action be the judge of Sincerity.
I don’t like it all that much myself, but tell me what you think, please?
