I demand a recount!
Jun. 9th, 2008 12:45 pmI have decided.
Since I have no interest whatsoever in either drinking or voting or driving or whatever you are supposed to be able to do in any hemisphere once you are of age, I have come to the following conclusion.
I am not turning twenty-one.
See, its all for the greater good, all right? I mean, I've always thought that the practice of becoming a legal adult just 'cause you've hit on so many birthdays was extremely dodgy. I mean, there should be a standardized test for this sort of thing. Becoming a legal adult is srz biznaz! Where are the qualifications, I ask you?
Anyway, I'm not ready. I can't even drive yet, and I've never worked a single job. It's entirely possible I can't cross the street by myself. I can't bring myself to interest myself in current affairs or politics or any of that shit. Declaring me a legal adult is just a waste of government money.
So I won't. Turn twenty-one, I mean. If that's okay with you. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to remain not-twenty-one forever. I know I gotta bite the dust and become old and tired and responsible sometime. But that day is not today. I'm just not ready to take that step, World. It's not you, it's me.
Really.
So...I'll just let you know when I'm ready, all right? It won't be long, just gimme about another two..three...years?
I ain't turning twenty-one.
You can't make me, damnit!
Shan't! Shan't, shan't shan't! Don't wanna! Won't! I won't turn twenty-one! You'll see!
So...so there!

Date: 2008-06-09 10:17 am (UTC)And I have to agree: Being an adult is completely up to perception (your own and the other's probably, too). Just: Nobody forces you to view yourself as an adult now, you know? Legally, I've been an adult for three years now (because here you cross the border with 18) and I don't quite completely feel like one. Heck, I have friends over 30 who don't always behave like what other people would consider appropriate for an adult ;)
But: Nobody can force you. It's just a number. And you can still act the way you want... you don't have to start driving, drinking or voting. And for some reason, I don't think you're keen on comitting crime anytime soon.
So, stay the way you are, no matter how long your birth dates back ;)
Anyway: Don't be grumpy - celebrate yourself :)
Because we sure are happy that you came here 21 years ago!
