Arthur C. Clarke's dead. 

Sri Lanka has always regarded him with a love bordering on reverence. My school used to be next door to his former residence and I used to sometimes catch a glimpse of him in his library out a classroom window. And yet I never got around to reading any of his books. 

I'm glad he had such a long and fulfilling life, and I'm proud to be a citizen of a country that he loved and that loved him. 

Rest in peace.

You must read his books! The one I would highly recommend is "The Fountains of Paradise" - it's not only his idea for a space station in stationary orbit reached by a sort of "elevator" but includes a brief history of the island of Taprobene, which is an old, old name for Sri Lanka. It's one of my favorites.

Thanks for the rec, Ruth. I'm behind on my reading anyway. Thanks for the tip about Taprobane - it was the Greek name for SL, I believe. In Ptolemy's map it features as a disproportionately large land mass, which is probably because it was an important stopover link between the sea routes of the East and the West back "in them days". =)
