Remembrance...
Feb. 6th, 2008 02:15 pmSri Lanka celebrated her 60th Anniversary of Independence the day before yesterday. Here is Prabhakaran's gift to the nation:
Bomb Blast at Fort Railway Station
Death Toll rises; nine schoolchildren killed.
Last rites for Slain Baseball Team Today.
Tigers and tears have no regard for race.
I have many friends from D.S Senanayake College. I can't imagine what they must be going through. It could very easily have been any of my own friends on that platform. It could have been me.
This was the terrorist group that George Bush, Eric Solheim and Ranil Wickramasinghe wanted to make us to make peace with. George Bush announced his stand while he was dropping bombs on Afghanistan hoping to hit at least Osama Bin Laden's pet dog, if he had one, and Ranil Wickramasinghe bought peace talks to the table only months after the Tigers reclaimed the Elephant Pass, killing over a 1000 Sri Lankan soldiers. I wish it were their dead bodies on that platform instead of innocent school kids.
Who is the LTTE?
You don't negotiate with monsters. You hunt them down and kill them until there isn't a single one of them left to spawn another.
I don't believe there is a God, because if there is, animals like these wouldn't be allowed to live.

Date: 2008-02-06 09:53 am (UTC)I hope none of your friends were armed (as in hurt or worse).

In the news business, we have a particular definition. But it always prooved true (and unfair to civilians, but that's T's purpose) in the field: Terrorism is always political.
I understand and am enclined to give those people tits for tats aka backing up not negociating. But hang them and make them martyrs and prone others to follow in their footsteps aka more killings and violence? Am not sure...(/back to pondering and thinking about that)
RE_RE_EDITED
Do you think closeness of Chinese New Year (on feb.7th) has anything to do with those?

Date: 2008-02-06 10:09 am (UTC)Don't let rage blind you.
Information's a tricky thing. it's source, thus objectivity too. And I'll shut up now 'cause am sure you got it.

Date: 2008-02-06 01:45 pm (UTC)Yes, of course I knew about the Dambulla bombings. Carole, the LTTE has been planting a bomb nearly every single week since August 2006. People die every week. The first bombs after the ceasefire agreement collapsed went off in my own neighbourhood and the neighbouring zone. Our school routes have been bombed. My family and our friends have escaped near-death so far through sheer chance alone.
The thing about living in a war zone is that after while you stop reacting to every single bomb report. You'll go insane if you do. However, there are a few that hits personal notes with some people, however detached we strive to make ourselves. I hate every single bombing they've done, but whenever they attack anything or anyone particularly close to my home and heart, the rage and helplessness I suppress everyday is brought home to me.
Oh, I understand about making monsters into martyrs whenever you kill them (I did watch Rang De Basanti ;-)) but I don't care. I want them gone, dead and torched so they can never threate my loved ones again. I know that's an unreasonable gut reaction, but I can't be objective in this situation. Can you blame me?
So far, none of my friends have died in a blast (touchwood, touchwood!) but you never know when our luck might run out.

Date: 2008-02-06 01:53 pm (UTC)I get infuriated whenever the media refers to the "ethinic conflict" in SL. This is not a Tamil-on-Singhalese war, and hasn't been for decades. This is about people inspiring terror, trying to force a totalitarian regime on half the country and abducting and brainwashing young children and turning them into suicide soldiers. I'm sure our govt's not half as squeaky clean as they appear to be, but then, what govt is? The bottom line is that the LTTE is an abomination and stands against what any decent human being should believe in.

Date: 2008-02-06 02:07 pm (UTC)but am with you on bottom line, govt cleaness and the fact, that it's a crazy mad world.
This is about people inspiring terror, trying to force a totalitarian regime on half the country and abducting and brainwashing young children and turning them
same happens in every totalitarian regime. Africa's (in its largest sense and continental geography) got those, too. Thing is, I never believed reigning by terror or inspiring terror was the way nor the privilege of great rulers. I still don't. I thing of it more as those of the weak and unworthy. For it's easier to do wrong and harm than good and kind ion the long run. But that's only a personal POV.
But then again, it's not everyday I can openly discuss it.

Date: 2008-02-06 02:10 pm (UTC)now am gonna be ever more worried about you and close ones. I wish you to always escape it alive.Actually, I wish it'd stop.
((Hasani))
yeah, I know the drill of not reacting to every bombing in sake of own sanity. But can't help other people to worry a little. Sure it's not easy, seeing this from the outside. Especially since, as far as I recall, it didn't make the evening news, here.
But then again, a lot of things didn't, starting with terrorist threads on Paris and France. And am speaking french tv!!
NCY why would it? dunno. relative proximity of China, I guess. Whimsy guess.
And can't definitively not blame you.
And, you got me, I never watched Rang de Basani! ;p
/back to touching wood.

Date: 2008-02-06 05:03 pm (UTC)You should watch Rang De Basanti. It's a great movie, which would've been an awesome movie if not for the second half. It's one of a kind, really. Only, they had to go all Bollywood and irrational at the end. It's a tragic film, with a curveball ending that the light-hearted first half of the movie leaves you completely unprepared for. It shouldn't have been tragic. But you should definitely give it a watch.
I'm reccing you the following movies. Most Aamir Khan movies of this decade are must-sees. Despite the hype surrounding Shah Rukh Khan, it's Aamir who is actually the better and more versatile actor, one of the few left who treats his acting like a craft.
1. Dil Chahta Hai.
2. Mangal Pandey: The Rising.
3. Rang De Basanti.
4. Taare Zameen Par.
Dil Chahta Hai is my favourite movie of these and was what got me hooked on Bollywood in the first place. He started the trend in unconventional film-making. If you have time (and money) check out his earlier work in Earth and Sarfarosh.
Oddly enough, the one year his movie received more hype than SRK's, was the one I didn't like. India went wild over Lagaan, which I could barely make myself sit out till the end, and SRK's movies Asoka and Chalte Chalte did only averagely. Now for me, Chalte Chalte is one of the cutest romantic films to come out of Bollywood and Asoka is an epic where both SRK and Kareena Kapoor deliver their finest performances to date. If it were me I'd have sent Asoka to the Oscars rather than Lagaan.
I know. I did a post on the war and now I'm talking about movies. I am a deeply superficial person. But it's a relief to take my mind off things, esp when I have no control over them. =)

Date: 2008-02-06 05:28 pm (UTC)for a moment I placed you in India. Sorry about that. My mind's been weird tday. I blame it on spending the whole day online (which I usually don't do) trying to redownload reinstall that f*cking msn messenger.
since I can be superficial and switch subjects in a snap, I failed miserably at downloading thus reinstalling which means am cut off the world (at least my friends and falmily world) and I miss chats treribly and makes me feel even more miserable *heavy choking, sniffing, chokin. pityfull isn't it?*
And you're a movie fan, too! ah, finally someone who enjoys life in technicolor! (HD, THX, whatever) ;)
WOW! avidely notes recommanded movies. Am gonna have to save some money. Or maybe open a bollywood specialized movie store to feed this addiction! *g*
SRK (and Ash for female leadings) is the only bollywood actors whose movies made it to french movie theaters so far but, I'll welcome any change more than willingly since I think it's starting monotonious getting to know Bollywood that way. It's like: "oh! a new Bollywood movie. I don't know the title but lemme guess: it's the one with SRK and Ash!" and then the cashier fgirl would go: "oh yeah! one Bollywood for you!" pityful!
So Rang de Basanti I guess the only place where I could find it would be la Fnac bollywood section. they're the only one to actually propose Bollywood movies with *others* actors. There's also Wednesday market at my cousins: there's a guy there who sells the last bollywood dvds (some aren't even out in french stores nor on dvd yet): that's where I got "provoked" and "gangster" and "the last legion" with Ash and Colin Firth. And maybe I'll stop balbing now. ;p
